To obtain an AKC championship title, a dog must
win a specified number of points under a specified number of
judges. Dogs working towards their championship in the AKC, compete
in classes against other non-champion dogs and the best dog wins.
The system does provide for an increased number of dogs that must be
beat each year to earn points, thus making championships more and
more difficult to obtain, promoting continual improvements in the
breed.
A champion can then compete in a class of
champions for “Best of Breed," referred to as the "specials" class.
The "Best of Breed" winner then competes among other breeds in the
toy group, and the group winner competes for "Best in Show." These
specials compete over the course of a year, vying for a position in
the Top 25 National Rankings.
The top 5 dogs in each breed receive a personal
invitation to attend the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, held in
February; the top 25 dogs are invited to the AKC Eukanuba Classic,
held in January each year.
