How does a dog become a champion? A Cavalier is eligable for Championship titles in both the AKC & CKCSC-USA. It earns it's Championship by winning a certain number of points under at least 3 different judges with 2 "major" wins. Champions may go on to professionally campaign in the AKC, competing for wins & points towards a National Ranking System and their Grand Champion title, a new award created in 2010. Ch. Rosscrea Flying High ROM finished in 2008 as the #7 Cavalier & his son, Ch. Covington PayDirt is 2009's #3 Cavalier (AKC Breed System). AKC's Top ranked dogs qualify and are invited to the two most coveted dog shows of the year; Decembers AKC Eukanuba Invitational & February's Westminster Kennel Club.
What is a Register of Merit (ROM)? Dogs or bitches that can consistently produce Champion progony are eligible for the ROM (Register of Merit) award. ROMs are awarded by the National Breed Clubs in both AKC and CKCSC-USA ROMS are achieved by only a few dogs each year in both organizations and are an extremely high honor for both the dog & it's breeders.
