 Each
year a few Covington dogs are ready to begin their show careers. The
dog is conditioned, well muscled, in good coat, at ideal weight, and
trained. Most importantly, the dog must be a good representative of
the breed, which is determined by a written
“Breed Standard.”
A breed standard exists for every breed, essentially acting as a
blueprint for the breed. The Cavalier standard dictates what Judges
should be judging and breeders should be breeding.
Awards are given based on the interpretation of the standard by that
judge. Standards leave room for interpretation, breeders and judges
alike will prioritize these standards differently based on what they
feel are the more desirable or less desirable traits in the breed.
