A "specialty show" is specific to a
particular breed and draws a high number of quality dogs from top
exhibitors and breeders around the country to one competitive
location. These are typically judged by tenured breed-specialist
judges, who are well versed in the breed. It is considered a
competition of the “Best of The Best”, judged by the “Best”. To
receive a win at a specialty show is a highly coveted and most
desired endorsement by breeders.
Most specialty winners at Covington, are both AKC and CKCSC-USA
champions. CKCSC-USA championships are earned using a system similar
to that used in England. Dogs must win a specified number of points
under a specified number of judges, and must also beat existing
champions and "Best in Show" winners to earn their win. The
intention is that each generation of champions is as good as or
better than the last. This encourages the quality in the breed to
continually improve.
